DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

The Dream is a film about the darkness that resides within us all. Something that is present whether we want to accept it or not. It is hard to resist the temptations of excess, greed, lust and things material. When we are weak, we find we give in to our darker natures. The inspiration has come from my research into spiritualism and a mixture of western/eastern esoterism.

Filming 'The Dream' was about keeping it simple despite how intricate it appears. I wrote, directed and shot this film with mostly a single hand held camera setup. I drew on my experience running and gunning - guerrilla filmmaking style and I had a micro budget. I wanted to show people that you don't need to have lots of money or equipment to make a beautifully crafted film, if anything there is a over use of technology in most films today and money can't fill holes in a bad story. I have always enjoyed the work of the early pioneers of optical effects like that of Linwood G. Dunn and the early optical features of early RKO films like 'King Kong' or 'Flying Down To Rio'. The simple beauty in the work of the Director Derek Jarman, especially his short in 'Aria' (1987) is another inspiration. For me one of my specialities is light and how it can shape the space you are working in to make it seem etherial or even limitless. It is amazing how you can take a very ordinary room and turn it into a magical wonderland with only a few lights.
